Harmony Korine is no stranger to controversy, having written several films centered around youth, sexuality, violence and corruption, that put previously unknown actors like Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson on the map. From Kids and Gummo to Mister Lonely and Trash Humpers, Korine incorporates surrealist storytelling and dark humor to inhabit characters suffering from dysfunctional childhoods, mental disorders, and poverties. With Spring Breakers, Korine ups the ante in casting four very famous young actresses (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine) as his wild protagonists, toying with armed robbery, sexual exploration and an off-kilter drug dealer (James Franco) on their path to the perfect spring break.
Hot off the film’s screening at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Rachel Korine and Harmony Korine spoke with Buzzine’s Daniel Schweiger to share the pop poetry and nonstop fun of filming their satirical and edgy indie hit, Spring Breakers…
Daniel Schweiger: As young actresses with managers and images to protect, how much fun did you have diving into the crazy world of Spring Breakers?
Selena Gomez: So much fun.
Vanessa Hudgens: We had the most amazing time. I mean this was just such a freeing and liberating experience as people and as actors. Harmony gave us the room to play and we got to do that every single day.
DS: Would you describe this as a movie about female empowerment?
Ashley Benson: Of course.
VH: Definitely. It’s rare that you get to see a movie like this with girls holding it together. They’re so badass. They’re so present. They’re gun-toting, in bikinis. It’s really empowering and just, visually, such a strong image.
DS: There seems to be a lot of improvisation going on, almost like you were making it up as you went. How much freedom were you given as actors to play around with the material?
‘I never knew her name or nothing, till I put two and two together, then I Googled her,’ Waka says of Twitter speculation.
After addressing that whole public fallout with Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame used his visit to “RapFix Live” to set one thing straight: He’s not dating Selena Gomez.
As host Sway Calloway pointed out, Waka’s Twitter feed can provide an endless stream of entertainment, and a few days ago, the rapper retweeted messages from his fans which hinted that he was getting close to the “Spring Breakers” actress. After fueling the rumor mill with his retweets, Waka eventually issued his own message, clarifying that nothing had gone down between the two. But what started all the talk in the first place?”
“That’s just fans and I’m a friendly person, fans [felt] like I should mess with Selena,” Waka said, explaining how it started. “I guess that’s what my fans want me to do, but I [tweeted] out that you should respect her, [because] she got a career.
“That was real random,” he added, explaining that he hadn’t actually known her name before the tweets began. “Honestly, I knew what it was but I never knew her name or nothing, till I put two and two together, then I Googled her and was like damn ‘she look good.’”
So, Waka isn’t tryna step in on Justin Bieber’s on-again, off-again ex-girlfriend then? “I ain’t know that was Justin Bieber’s girl,” he responded. “No disrespect to Justin Bieber — he’s like, the next Michael Jackson — but I don’t even know a Justin Bieber song ‘cause we’re both in two different worlds. I don’t go into people relations. I don’t even know the top blog sites. I don’t even practice that. That’s a form of snitching to me. Where I’m from, it ain’t cool so I try to just walk a straight line.”
Just a few days before Selena Gomez became a fixture on his timeline, Waka also sent a random tweet to ”Boy Meets World” star Danielle Fishel, simply writing, “Squadd,” which both confused and entertained the actress, who quickly responded to him. According to the ATL rapper, that was simply his way of saying, “I see you. It ain’t like I wanna talk to you or nothing — you pretty. I want you to know that from this direction we feel like you look like something. Keep your hustle on.”
@selenagomez: Have I mentioned how much you guys Rock! Haven’t used that one in a while :) #12DaysUntilComeAndGetIt
Justin Bieber took an unexpected trip before heading back to Europe tonight.
The 19-year-old, who’s scheduled to resume his Believe tour tomorrow in Munich, briefly visited ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez’s house on the way to the airport this afternoon.
A source exclusively tells E! News that Bieber arrived at Gomez’s Encino, Calif., home at around 3:30 p.m. and stayed for just over an hour.
The beleaguered pop star, bodyguard in tow, was driven through the front gates in a bus-type vehicle.
Shortly after Bieber left, Gomez was seen driving away from the house as well.
Her ex is due to fly out from LAX tonight, but we’re told he was driven back to his own home in Calabasas directly after leaving Gomez.
Hey, the kid’s had a lot on his mind—maybe he forgot his passport!
